Practice Cancelled This Weekend

AquaTex Swim Team is hosting its biggest swim meet of the season this weekend so there will be no water polo training (age group, high school, masters, Swim2Score) on Saturday, September 24 or Sunday, September 25. We will have a makeup practice on Thursday, September 22 from 7-9 PM. That training session will be almost exclusively for our Age Group and Novice athletes since there is high school water polo taking place that evening.

The parent meeting for Thursday, September 22, is still on the calendar. We can shift the start time to 7:30 to accommodate those taking kids to practice but let me know how this works, or doesn’t, for you.

It’s been a while and a whirlwind of activity so let’s get straight in to the update.

First, well done to all our athletes at all our different levels of experience for going 2-2 at the Armadillo Classic up in The Colony. It’s very gratifying that we’re in the position where we can now regularly expect to send teams from AquaTex to these tournaments. And thank you to all the parents, friends, and family who came to support our athletes.

Roster Calls

We have several signed up for the Alamo Fall Classic for our 14u, 12u, 10u athletes but want more! This tournament is in San Antonio so easier to manage than those in North Texas. Make sure to go to your TeamUnify account to commit to the tournament. This applies to our awesome Swim2Score athletes as well! We want a huge 10u team and this is the perfect opportunity for newcomers. Just a reminder that Swim2Score families who want to play in a tourney must be currently registered with AquaTex AND are required to have a Bronze membership with USA Water Polo.

Then, very good news: another San Antonio tournament is on the calendar for our 18u/16u athletes the first weekend of November. Several families have asked when the first chance of the fall would come for high school athletes to compete and now we have that opportunity. So sign up!

Parent Meeting

We had to postpone a parent meeting a couple weeks ago but we’ll re-convene via jit.si on Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 PM. Team members will be sent a link to join the meeting via GroupMe and TeamUnify email. jit.si works on any browser but requires the app to use on your device.

Masters Update

Several updates regarding our masters programming:

  • Beginning this Sunday the hours for masters water polo will change by 30 minutes. It will start at 10:30 AM and go until noon – 30 minutes of warmup in the South pool followed by one hour of all-deep scrimmaging.
  • Some clarification about high school and younger athletes
    • No middle school or younger athletes are allowed at masters scrimmages
    • High school athletes must be approved by AquaTex coaches to play at masters
    • Those select high school athletes who are NOT currently active, registered, paying members of AquaTex must pay the $10.00 drop in fee. AquaTex-registered high schoolers can play masters at no additional cost but must be approved by AQTX coaches.
  • All masters athletes who drop in owe AquaTex $10 per session. We strongly recommend you join AquaTex ($35/month is a bargain) rather than dealing with Venmo payments. But please be sure to pay so we can continue offering masters.

Swim2Score Update

We’ve never had more interest in our Swim2Score program than we do now, so thank you to everyone who has registered and given us a trial run, and to our awesome coaches, led by Babs.

Speaking of registration: a reminder: after your athlete’s two-session trial you must register with AquaTex in order to continue with the program.

Also, we are now requiring all our Swim2Score athletes to join USA Water Polo. There are several options:

  • If you think your athlete will only be participating at our training sessions at Micki and not competing at USA Water Polo tournaments then you can sign up for a “Splashball” membership
  • If you want your athlete to compete at USA Water Polo tournaments (the Alamo Classic, for example) then he or she must be a “Bronze” member of USA Water Polo.
    • (Swim2Score athletes who graduate to the “Novice Waterpolo” group will be required to have a Bronze membership as do all of our high school and age group athletes)

Team Suits

The Turbo Store should be closed for the season now. Given that we are a small club we will continue to work with Turbo as a courtesy to those who choose their product over RYTE. But Turbo is simply not set up to deliver as quickly to our families as RYTE.

A reminder that I’ll have a RYTE fitting kit for boys for the next couple weeks. Come try one on cuz team suits are required for all our (non Swim2Score) athletes. Then order one here.

ODP

USA Water Polos’ Olympic Development Program is around the corner. We encourage our athletes to give the program a try. We’ve been fortunate to have many AQTX athletes take part in the clinics and also selected to travel teams (Regional Championships and boys’ National Championships will both be in San Antonio!). Labor Day, Swim2Score Update, Novice Group, and More

A quick note for our families who were emailed most of this earlier today.

  • Practice is on tonight, Monday, from 7-9 as usual.
  • On Saturday, September 10, Swim2Score will take place from noon to 1 PM instead of 11-noon.
  • I’ve emailed several families but may have missed some: please verify in TeamUnify that your athlete age 18 and younger is registered in the correct AquaTex billing group. The only groups your athletes should be registered with are “Waterpolo,” “Swim/Polo,” or “Swim2Score.” (Those who help us coach Swim2Score are already in the proper group so no need to update.) And “Masters Waterpolo” is the correct group for any water polo player who is a high school graduate. “Middle School” is a swim team group and does not apply to water polo.
  • Novice waterpolo: we are soft-launching our Novice programming beginning tonight. There is not currently a TeamUnify group to join so we are offering Novice athletes a chance to give it a try on a trial basis. Novices are those age 9-14 who have “graduated” from Swim2Score but may not be quite ready to join our Age Group training yet. Sessions are one hour each, four times a week: Monday/Wednesday from 7-8 PM; Saturday from 10-11 AM; Sunday from 9-10 AM.
  • I’ll share the schedule for this weekend’s Armadillo Classic the moment I get it.
  • If you have not joined our GroupMe I strongly encourage it. That’s where we communicate most urgently.
  • There is an online parent meeting on Thursday 8 September at 7:00 PM via jit.si meet, which works on all browsers but may require the app on a device. The link to join the meeting was emailed earlier and will be in the GroupMe as well. If you have any subjects you want covered just let me know via email, text, or DM.
  • A reminder that every AquaTex athlete is required to purchase a team suit. My strong preference is that you buy via RYTE Sport but Turbo suits are also available. I have a RYTE fitting kit for boys with me. If you want to try one on (strongly recommended) I will have the kit with me at practice.

USAWP membership

If you are not currently a member of USA Water Polo, including Swim2Score athletes, make sure to join before your next session. Swim2Score athletes can join USA Water Polo’s “Splashball” group but it would be better to have a Bronze membership so you can compete at tournaments.

Fall Tourneys, Team Suits, Parent Meeting Planned…

Time to check in as the summer winds down and the mosquitoes have a field day at Micki!

First, thanks to all our new and trial members. We are having the biggest boom of new families since the club started so we are grateful for you being part of the club. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: this is a really exciting fall for the team.

We are working harder than we ever has as a club, meaning we are getting our athletes in as good of shape as we can in four practices a week. Our expectations are high and our young athletes have responded very well to our demands. We want to be the team that won’t be outworked but we have to do actual work to get there. So far, so good.

Tournaments

The fall tournament schedule is updated so please log in to your TeamUnify accounts to commit to each one of them. Use TeamUnify to commit, but I share more details about each event on the aquatexwaterpolo.com site.

By “commit” we mean share your intentions. There is always some chance we won’t have enough players to go to a tournament (increasingly rarely). But by committing on TeamUnify you’re saying you will take part and that you understand you’ll be charged for it after the tourney is over.

The Cowtown Stampede has been updated on TeamUnify; it had an incorrect deadline but has now been fixed. And remember that participation in that tournament is determined by age as of August 1 and not by school grade.

Scroll down to the FAQs and expand “How does traveling to tournaments work?” It includes the fact that if we don’t have enough athletes to field a strictly-AquaTex team we combine with our friends from Longhorn.

School grade

I shared a link via GroupMe to a form we’re asking all our families with 14u athletes to complete. We need to confirm which grade your youngster is in! The first three tournaments of the fall are grade-based instead of age-based. Let me know if you need the link. The form should take 2-3 minutes max.

Required team suits

A RYTE fitting kit for boys’ suits is on the way. So if you want to wait and actually try on one of the boys’ suits prior to purchasing, it should be here in the next few days and I’ll make it available to you at practice.

As you know all registered athletes are required to have a team suit. Based on input from our athletes and families we asked the popular fabricator Turbo, based in Spain and vendor to the US National Team among many other American programs, to provide suits for us in addition to our main vendor RYTE Sports. The AquaTex Turbo store is now open until September 18 for you to place suit or robe orders. After that it will close for several months.

However, as much as Turbo provides very fine products, I have come to advise all our families to order from RYTE Sport. For several reasons:

  • It’s cheaper
  • The store never closes; orders can be placed throughout the year
  • The suits are fabricated in the US so they don’t get hung up in customs
  • The orders take something like 2-4 weeks. Recently Turbo gear has been taking quite a bit longer
  • The people at RYTE have treated AquaTex quite well over the years (not that Turbo hasn’t). Our RYTE competition caps are really good
  • The water polo suits are very solid and durable
  • Alex Young, the founder of RYTE, worked at Kap7 (Turbo) for three years so he knows those products

One additional pitch: regardless of vendor we know that some boys prefer jammers over water polo briefs. But, as I think some of you know, jammers are not made for water polo durability. Coaches all suggest boys buy and get used to wearing a brief, which will last for as long as you fit in it.

All members are also required to have at least one AquaTex tee shirt for travel tournaments. You can shop for all our gear in our fantastic new online store.

Parent meeting

I have a parent meeting tentatively on the calendar for Thursday, September 8 at 7:00 PM. It will be held online (I like the open source jit.si meet for videoconferencing. It works on any browser but requires the app if you’re participating via a device) and I’ll cover our plans for the fall and beyond. But it’s also just a chance for our new parents to introduce themselves, ask questions, and hear more about how the club operates.

Novice group

We’re still planning on a new Novice group beginning on September 5. We need to make some internal changes to our TeamUnify database and will let you know when that’s all done. Novices are age 10-14 who are new to the sport and need a different level of training than our Age Group athletes. Novices will practice four times a week for one hour each.

Game days

It is very likely we’ll host at least one Game Day this fall so that all our 14u athletes can play regardless of school grade. It may simply be a set of officially refereed scrimmages against Longhorn. Stay tuned.

USAWP membership

Since we’re using TeamUnify more than in the past I’d appreciate it if, the next time you log in, you enter your athlete(s) USA Water Polo membership number in the proper field. I do not have access to your records at that level so I can’t do it for you. Thanks in advance.

Midsummer Madness, Summer Tees, AQTX TV Flashback

The summer rolls on, our numbers are big, training has been as productive as ever… time for an update.

Midsummer Madness

Replacing the cancelled Suns Out Guns Out is Triumph Aquatics’ Midsummer Madness on July 10-11, and the AquaHorns are going. It’s our last USAWP sanctioned tournament prior to JOs and we want to put the skills we’ve been sharpening on display against our Texas rivals.

Use the “Summer Commitment” google sheet to update your intention to play. If you need a link to that sheet just contact me. Check out the event page for locations and the teams we want to send.

Summer 2021 Tee Shirts

Those of you who signed up for our burnt orange 2021 summer tee shirts will hopefully get them by Friday, July 2 (such a good reason not to miss practice!). We had to revise the design just slightly especially to include our new Italian sponsor Maim Method, which has provided Alon with water-filled weights with which he plans to terrorize… no, TRAIN our athletes. Here are the front and rear designs for the shirt.

Junior Olympics

The schedules for JOs won’t be available for some time according to my sources (it’s Joe) at USA Water Polo. Scheduling for the two California sessions is only recently or not yet complete. Only after those are done will the North Texas session be put on a spreadsheet. We’ll share that with everyone the second we get it.

As for locations please be ready to compete at locations that are as far as one hour apart. USAWP will attempt to be reasonable about where a team’s games will take place. But given the logistics of the overall event we need to be prepared to cross from one side of the metroplex to the other.

There have been some useful conversations on our individual GroupMe chats and many have booked places to stay already. But we currently have no news about where our games will be.

Other Stuff

Free Women’s Suit

We have a women’s size 30 AquaTex water polo suit from RYTE, our vendor (they mistakenly sent one to Coach Matt, who for some reason doesn’t want it). Matthew has graciously donated it. So, contact me if that’s the proper size and you’re interested in having it. If multiple athletes are interested I’ll use technology to randomly select one of them. #bestsuitsintexas

Outstanding Tournament Fees

There are a couple payments still pending from athletes who participated in the SWZ JOs qualifier on June 11-13 in Houston. The fee is $100 payable to Coach James via Venmo. If you prefer that we bill you via your Team Unify account with AquaTex we can make that happen. And a gentle reminder that your athlete won’t be allowed to register for another USAWP event until the balance has been cleared. Thanks!

Milestones

Welcome to Kai, Laird, Pua and Izzy, our newest members! Laird has been swimming for AquaTex for some time while Kai joins us from Rouse HS where he wishes there were a water polo team (so do we). Pua and Izzy moved to Texas from Hawai’i a few years ago and are our youngest new members. Welcome to all of them. And Happy Birthday to Nilmary who turned 16 on June 16!

Training Schedule

Both Masters and Youth/HS practices are ON for the morning of Sunday, July 4. Training is on the entire following week with the possible exception of Sunday the 11th depending on coaches’ availability and our numbers at the tournament in Houston.

Check out this blast from the past, featuring a 16-year-old Coach Kendall, in which two news personalities from KCEN-TV visited Micki to share with their viewers the skills required to play water polo just prior to the Rio Olympic Games. Tokyo is just around the corner so who knows, maybe another TV station wants to produce a piece on how to watch the oldest team sport in the Games…

Southwest Zone Championships

Results

As Coach Tom mentioned via GroupMe yesterday it was an historic weekend for both AquaTex and Longhorn. All six of our Longhorn teams are going to Junior Olympics after we experienced our best results ever at Zone Championships, which means more of our athletes and teams than ever will be playing at Junior Olympics in July. All credit to our tough and improving players, and to our families who were so immensely supportive, for such a successful three days of water polo. Fees

Each athlete who participated at SWZ Champs is charged $100 for the tournament to cover entry fee and coaches’ expenses. Contact me for my Venmo to make a payment, and thanks to those who already have.

Training

We will be utilizing our time at Micki this summer to do as much joint training with Longhorn as possible as we approach Junior Olympics. Any joint training of JOs teams will take place along side regular practice, not replace it. As of today after discussions with Tom our focus will be on 16u boys and 18u girls on Sundays from 9-11 AM (Masters from 8-9:30 as a bonus); 18u boys on Tuesdays from 7-9 PM (regular AQTX practice goes from 6-8 PM, plus masters on Sunday). We will update those plans as they are solidified for other teams and, perhaps, other training opportunities. Those current plans do not preclude us from making space at our practices for any and all the other age group/gender teams. We’ll continue to look in to it with Longhorn coaches.

We’re fortunate in that we can easily accommodate our Longhorn teammates at Micki. That is not the case at the Texas Swim Center. In order for AquaTex players to join Longhorn for practice those individuals would have to join TXLA. Thus our focus on working at Micki as much as possible.

Sunday Masters

The aging masses have spoken and prefer early Sunday morning masters water polo over late Tuesday evening. So the schedule has changed. Until August 1, 2021 we’ll plan on masters scrimmaging from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM leading in to our youth/HS practice. Don’t forget: no more on-deck, walk-in payments. Register for masters water polo via our Team Unify portal and make sure your USA Water Polo membership is current.

Suit Fitting

I’ll be sending our RYTE fitting kit back to the vendor at the end of this week so come to practice and let me know you’d like to try one on (they’re the best looking suits in the Southwest Zone, c’mon.). Try one on for size and then order directly from the fabricator. Feedback about our suits has been positive and they are among the least expensive on the water polo market while still being very high quality (our friends from RYTE formerly worked for Turbo and Zumo). And they are shipped directly to the address of your choice. AquaTexans are STRONGLY advised to purchase a team suit, but not required (nudge nudge). And several of our female athletes have said that the sizes match those of their other suits, in case you wondered.

Summer Tournaments

Our calendar page is now updated to include the one directly managed by the Southwest Zone so you can see all the USAWP tournaments and other events that are upcoming.

As for scheduling, we will not be sending teams to the Dallas Summer Classic (renamed the Endless Summer Classic, I think) June 26-27. And my understanding is that Sun’s Out Guns Out is likely to be cancelled and replaced, possibly, with one or more tournaments around July 10-11 and/or 17-18. We’ll obviously look for other opportunities and share any updates as they emerge.

Thanks to everyone who attended our online parent meeting on June 9. Bad news is that I can’t find the meeting recording for those who wanted to watch it. But I’ll put together an outline of the things we covered so you have a general idea, and am happy to follow up with anyone who would like to.

SWZ Championships Schedule, Roster Deadline, RYTE Suit Fitting

Howdy AquaTexans. An update primarily but not entirely for our Southwest Zone Championships participants.

A lot of information is now updated on our Southwest Zone Championships event page. That includes the live schedule and results, admissions and spectator info, and more. You may want to bookmark it as that will be updated with new info when it emerges.

Outstanding SWZ Champs Items

I’m aware that some of you have already begun the processes below. If so, feel free to remind me and Coach Tom (although we’ll know because USAWP will tell us!) what your status is. As of Sunday afternoon here’s what’s outstanding from athletes on our SWZ Champs Rosters. Remember, USAWP will remove ineligible athletes from our rosters on June 9 at 11:01 PM.

  • Tomas B (12u/14u): birth date verification (in progress I believe)
  • Joey B (16u): sign COVID 19 waiver; upgrade USAWP membership to “Gold”
  • Alexander T (18u): birth date verification (in progress I believe)
  • Morgan S (18u): change club affiliation to Longhorn; upgrade USAWP membership to “Gold”

AQTX Waterpolo Online Parent Meeting

On Wednesday, June 9 at 7:30 PM I’ll be hosting a meeting for all active AquaTex Waterpolo parents and guardians (no athletes). We’ll cover anything remaining about Southwest Zone Championships and Junior Olympics, our summer plans, and a more strategic discussion of what our plans are for the club as we continue to grow. A link to the meeting will be shared in GroupMe and via email.

This Week’s Training

On Tuesday we’re asking our Longhorn teammates to join us for our 6pm to 8pm training so don’t miss it if possible.

Southwest Zone Champs games begin on Friday so Friday and Sunday practices are cancelled. Thursday practice for middle schoolers is on.

Team Suits and Other Gear

Several have asked about team suits. I’ll bring a fitting kit to practice for the next couple weeks. Try one on for size and then order directly from the fabricator. Custom Embroidery

Also, as you’ll see in our RYTE store, there are lots of other items for purchase, but no polos, trucker or bucket hats, stuff that generally requires embroidery. If you have an item you’d like to have embroidered with the AquaTex Waterpolo scorpion logo, Neil Gierman of Round Rock Embroidery can do it for you at about $8.00 per item. Feel free to purchase your own shirts, caps, jackets, parkas and drive them over to Neil, who lives kinda near Cedar Ridge HS. In my experience it’s taken about a week to 10 days per order. Big Tournament News, Scorpions Ball Returns, Masters Battle

Slowly we’re returning to some sort of normal. Not quite, but there are some encouraging signs. Masters are back in the pool, Scorpion Ball is returning, our numbers are growing, and we might be hosting… an actual tournament!

Tournament

USA Water Polo wants to co-host a tournament at Micki, tentatively set for October 10-11 (Oct. 3rd and 4th, which we floated last week, won’t work for scheduling reasons). The Central Texas tournament would be split so younger athletes would play at Milburn in Cedar Park and older ones at Micki. It’s exciting news for us since it would be the first full-contact tournament in Texas since prior to the lockdown.

USA Water Polo will be managing the tournament but AquaTex will be required to have volunteers run the tables and oversee hospitality. We also have the opportunity to sell concessions and gear.

Welcome (Back)

We’re very happy to have Aaron back with AquaTex after a long hiatus. Welcome back! And our partnership with Longhorn has been so good for the club as we have several of their athletes training with us while UT is closed. We love having them with us: Greyson, Kelly, Owen, and the recent influx of 12u athletes, Cruz, Flora, Chase, Nick, and Landon. #AquaHorns

Scorpions Ball (formerly Splashball) Returns

Coach Hayley Krebsbach is back to lead our Scorpions Ball program which will start the fall on Thursday, September 24 from 6.30 PM to 7.30 PM. The program is for athletes age 5-11, designed to provide basic skills and understanding of the sport of water polo in a fun, dynamic, safe, and easy to learn aquatic experience. It costs $5/session and $10 annual USA Water Polo fee. The registration process is new and simpler (and mandatory). Click here for the link.

Weekly Online Learning

We’ll return to Zoom in order to go over game film and other technical and tactical aspects of the game that we don’t get to cover during pool time training. It’ll be scheduled for every Thursday at 7:30 PM. Look for a Zoom invite via our GroupMe and/or email.

Jolyn Fitting

We’ll be receiving a Jolyn fit kit for their new water polo suits. We can do fittings beginning as early as practice on Sept. 16. The kit will be available at practice for at least a week.

Masters

We’ve had really good turnout for our Saturday masters’ shoot-arounds, which have included massive “ultimate” rules battles. Thanks to everyone for coming. There are several cancellations due to schedule conflicts on the calendar so check it out before you arrive at Micki.

Olympic Development Program at Micki

Registration is open for the first clinics of the season for USA Water Polo’s Olympic Development Program. They will be held at Micki on September 26 and 27. Girls will attend on Saturday afternoon and boys on Sunday morning. Coach James is in his fifth season as Head Coach of the program along side some of the best coaches in Texas.

RYTE Sport Store

RYTE has told me that their ordering process has changed for certain items, mainly those that require embroidery. So we will now be keeping the RYTE store open for limited times at the beginning of each season/session. It will be open for the remainder of September and will then re-open in November as the winter season arrives.

New Website Intro, Masters Shootaround, Jolyn Team Gear

New Website

The new aquatexwaterpolo.com is now public (as you can see…). It allows us to share more content, improve our communications and marketing, and give more direct and colorful access to our online vendors. It is not a replacement for the club’s Team Unify site but an enhancement. All billing and some communication will still be done via the other site.

Masters

Good news for our masters friends. We will open the pool on Saturdays after our youth practice to a masters shoot-around. This will begin this Saturday, August 29. We will follow the same rules as we do for our youth practices including but not limited to:

  • Don’t come if you’re ill, running a temperature.
  • Two meters physical distancing in and out of the pool: no physical contact = no scrimmaging (our youth athletes play a version of “ultimate” that prohibits physical contact and maintains 2 meters of distance).
  • No dryland exercises or warmup. We get in the pool as soon as we arrive.
  • Athletes arrive and leave wearing swimwear.
  • Athletes arrive and leave wearing face masks.
  • Coaches are encouraged to wear masks unless sufficiently distant from athletes in the pool.
  • The locker rooms are closed except for toilets, which should be used only if absolutely necessary.
  • No spectators.

Olympic Development Program at Micki

The USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program will hold it’s first Southwest Zone camp of the 2020-21 season at Micki Krebsbach on September 26 and 27. Girls will attend on Saturday afternoon and boys on Sunday morning. Many more details to come but we want as many of our athletes to attend as possible. Coach James is in his fifth season as Head Coach of the program along side some of the best coaches in Texas.

Thunder Scrimmage

Our friends at Thunder Water Polo in Dallas are scrimmaging and have asked if we’d be interested in sending a team up there for a weekend competition in the next several weeks. Let Coach James know if you are interested.

RYTE Sport

After having shut down production so they could make face masks, RYTE Sports is back in business and our store is open. Custom suits and other gear are still in there.
